Eight Senators Defect to ADC, Shifting Political Landscape

On a significant day in Nigerian politics, eight senators, including former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This move alters the balance within the Senate's minority bloc, positioning the ADC as a new main opposition platform.

The defectors include Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), Toni Nwoye (Anambra North), Lawal Adamu Usman (Kaduna Central), Moham Ogoshi Onawo (Nasarawa South), Augustin Akobundu (Abia Central), Ireti Kingibe (FCT), and Bino Yaro (Adamawa South). The senators cited deep internal crises, leadership disputes, and ongoing litigations within the PDP as reasons for their departure.

The situation escalated further when Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe from Abia South justified his defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), claiming he had been expelled, which raised constitutional concerns regarding his seat. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, issued an ultimatum regarding Abaribe's claims, indicating a tense atmosphere in the chamber.
