Nine Senators Defect to African Democratic Congress

On Thursday, a total of nine senators announced their defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a plenary session. The breakdown of the defectors includes five senators from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) — Dauda Yaro, Lawal Usman, Ogochi Onaw, Aminu Tambuwal, and Austin Akubondu — and three from the Labour Party (LP) — Ireti Kingibe, Victor Umeh, and Toni Nwoye.

The senator from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) also joined the ADC. The defections were attributed to leadership crises within the PDP and LP.

Notably, the senator from APGA had been expelled from the party in September 2025, which prompted his move. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu confirmed that several lawmakers submitted letters notifying the House of their political realignment, which included six lawmakers leaving the PDP and LP to join the ADC.
