ADC Gains Ground as Lawmakers Defect Ahead of 2027 Elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has successfully dislodged the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the Nigerian Senate, with nine lawmakers defecting to the ADC and other parties during a plenary session on Thursday. The defectors include notable figures such as Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Kingibe, alongside seven others.

The defecting lawmakers represent various constituencies, including Victor Afam Ogen from Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, Peter Aniekw from Anambra East/West, and Lilian Orogwu from Awka North/Awka South. Other notable defections include Jess Okei Joe Onuakalusi from Oshodi-Isolo in Lagos State, Murphi Omoruyi from Edo State, and Peter Uzokw from Nnewi North/South in Anambra State.

Additionally, six lawmakers left the PDP and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Zakaria Dauda Nyampa from Adamawa State and Midala Balami from Borno State. The defections were formalized through letters addressed to the Speaker, highlighting a crisis within the former platforms and indicating a significant political shift as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.
