ADC Criticizes Akpabio Over Controversial 2026 Electoral Act

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemned Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his role in the passage of the 2026 Electoral Act, asserting that it undermines Nigeria's ethical democratic standards. In a statement from the party's public secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC criticized provisions in the law designed to protect dishonesty and weaken opposition parties, eroding public confidence in Nigeria's democracy.

Akpabio dismissed the opposition's objections, insisting that the Act was correctly formulated to address electoral issues. He anticipated a harsh historical judgment regarding the 2026 Electoral Act, particularly its provision that removes certification forgery as a valid ground for challenging election results.

The ADC highlighted that this contradicts sections of the Nigerian Constitution, which disqualify individuals presenting forged certificates. The party expressed concern that such legislation sends a damaging message to Nigerians, particularly the youth, suggesting that certification forgery would no longer have serious consequences, thus reinforcing negative stereotypes about corruption in public life.
