Adeniyi Announces Digital Reforms for Cargo Clearance

Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of Customs, has pledged to implement deeper digital reforms in cargo clearance within Nigeria's ports. This commitment was announced in a statement following a high-level strategic meeting with the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, represented by Zahrah Audu.

The aim is to dismantle long-standing bureaucratic bottlenecks and integrate cutting-edge technology to enhance Nigeria's competitiveness in global trade. Adeniyi emphasized the importance of regular engagement with stakeholders, including the American Business Council and trade associations, to address operational concerns.

The Nigerian Customs Service is working with the World Customs Organization on a time release study, which will be publicly launched on January 26, 2026. This study aims to reflect the real operational environment at Nigerian ports.

Adeniyi also highlighted ongoing investments in scanning technology and information communication technology infrastructure to reduce reliance on physical cargo examinations. The reforms are expected to facilitate a 24-hour port operation, requiring full participation across the logistics chain.
