NERC Directs DisCos to Combat Unauthorized Electricity Access

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a directive to electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to strictly follow standard operating procedures (SOP) concerning unauthorized access to electricity. This directive, published on NERC's website, mandates that DisCos identify areas suspected of unauthorized access based on anomalies in consumption patterns and irregular billing.

DisCos are required to conduct thorough analyses of electricity consumption data and billing records to detect discrepancies indicative of potential unauthorized access. Furthermore, NERC instructs DisCos to employ surveillance techniques to monitor suspicious activities and physically inspect meters in these areas for signs of tampering or illegal connections.

DisCos must also document their findings and maintain records of investigations, including video evidence. If unauthorized access is confirmed, DisCos are to issue disconnection notices and take legal action against individuals or entities involved, collaborating with law enforcement agencies as necessary.
