Advocacy group ends campaign against sexual abuse, child molestation

The advocacy group SPAR Community has concluded its Break Cycle Campaign aimed at addressing the culture of silence and institutional neglect that allows sexual abuse and child molestation to thrive in Nigeria. The 30-day initiative, which ran from July to August 2025, sought to confront issues of denial and complicity in cases of abuse, encourage open conversations, promote prevention, and provide support for survivors.

According to the World Health Organization, globally, one in four girls and one in nine boys have experienced sexual abuse at some point in their lives. SPAR Community highlighted the widespread nature of abuse in Nigerian homes, schools, churches, and streets, emphasizing the need for increased awareness, tailored sex education materials, and survivor support.

The campaign, inspired by the organization's work with children and young adults, aimed to break the cycle of silence and ensure survivors are heard while promoting a culture of accountability within the Nigerian community.
