CAF Announces AFCON to Move to Four-Year Cycle from 2028

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will transition to a four-year cycle from 2028, moving away from its traditional two-year format. The decision was made by CAF President Patric Motsepe ahead of the 35th edition of the competition hosted by Morocco.

The move is intended to reduce the frequency of AFCON, which accounts for a significant portion of CAF's revenue. The shift will also address scheduling conflicts with European club tournaments and other global events.

The decision follows discussions with FIFA, with compromises acknowledged due to unavoidable circumstances. Additionally, CAF plans to increase the prize money for the tournament.

The final of the 2027 edition will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, while the 2028 edition's host in East Africa is yet to be confirmed.
