AFN Mandates National Trials for Commonwealth Games 2026

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has mandated that athletes participate in the upcoming national trials as a prerequisite for selection to the Commonwealth Games. These trials are scheduled to take place from June 20 to June 22, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos.

The event will feature 32 track and field events for both men and women, providing athletes the opportunity to meet the prescribed qualification standards. AFN spokesman Maxwel Kumoy stated that participation will be restricted to those who achieve these standards.

Athletes are expected to arrive in Lagos on June 19 and depart on June 23. To support athletes in their quest for qualification, the AFN will provide accommodation during the qualification period.

AFN President Tonobok Okowa emphasized the significance of these trials in preparing Nigeria for the Commonwealth Games and expressed confidence that the event will help identify the country's best talent. He also commended the support from the National Sports Commission.
