Nairobi to Host 2029 World Athletics Championships

Nairobi, Kenya, has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, a historic decision as it marks the first time Africa will host this premier global athletics event. The announcement was made during the 242nd World Athletics Council Meeting held in Budapest, Hungary, which concluded on September 15.

The bidding process was highly competitive, with four strong proposals considered, ultimately leading to Nairobi and Munich, Germany, being chosen as hosts for the 2029 and 2031 championships, respectively. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described the bidding as one of the strongest in the championships' history.

Nairobi's selection is a significant achievement for African athletics, showcasing the continent's capability to host major events. The city previously hosted the World U18 Championships in 2017 and the World U20 Championships in 2021.

The Kasarani Stadium, currently undergoing renovations, will serve as the main venue for the championships, which is expected to enhance Kenya's already strong athletics reputation.
