London Submits Bid for 2029 World Athletics Championships

London has formally submitted its final bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, with the potential to generate more than £400 million ($530 million) in economic and social benefits. The bid was submitted by Athletic Ventures (AV), a joint venture comprising UK Athletics, London Marathon Events, and the Great Run Company, to World Athletics on Thursday.

The proposed venue for the championships is the London Stadium, which previously hosted the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2017 World Athletics Championships. UK Athletics CEO Jack Buckner stated that the bid is a significant part of Britain’s Olympic legacy plans and confirmed an agreement with the London Stadium and West Ham United for its use.

Great Run Company CEO Paul Foster described the bid as outstanding, highlighting London’s history of hosting major athletics events. London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher noted that the championships would be accompanied by mass-participation events across Britain.

World Athletics is expected to announce the host city in September.
