Onyinyechi Breaks World Record at African Open Championship

At the African Open Para Powerlifting Championship held in Oran, Nigeria, Onyinyechi achieved a remarkable feat by smashing the world record in the women's 67kg category. Team Nigeria concluded the four-day championship with a total of 49 medals, comprising 32 gold, 12 silver, and 5 bronze, securing the second position overall, trailing behind Egypt, which topped the standings with 84 medals, including 47 gold.

Other notable performances included Folashad Oluwafemiayo, who won gold in the women's 86kg category, and Anigbogu Chikordi, who claimed silver in the women's 50kg category, lifting 114kg, narrowly finishing behind compatriot Ajiboy Rukayat, who won gold with a lift of 115kg. This championship served as a crucial qualifier for the upcoming World Championship scheduled for December in Bahrain, where athletes earned valuable ranking points toward qualifying for the 2028 Summer Paralympics in Los Angeles.

The event featured 151 athletes from 15 African nations and several Asian countries.
