Nigeria's Weightlifting Team Shines at African Championship

At the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championship held in Ismailia, Egypt, Nigeria's weightlifting contingent achieved a historic record by finishing with a total of 29 medals, comprising 14 gold, 13 silver, and 2 bronze. The National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, commended the athletes for their resilience and outstanding representation of Nigeria on the continental stage.

Director General Hon Bukola Olopad noted that the championship results reflect Nigeria's growing strength across various sports. Notable performances included Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who won three gold medals in the women's 48kg category, and Rafiatu Folashad Lawal, who dominated the 58kg class with three gold medals.

The men's events also saw success, with Omovigho Agboro winning one gold and two silver medals in the 65kg category. Nigeria concluded its participation in the championship on Saturday, adding five additional medals to its tally.
