Nigeria Launches Africa's First Wheelchair Fencing Academy

The Nigeria Fencing Federation inaugurated Africa's first Wheelchair Fencing Academy, the 2026 ENABLE Wheelchair Fencing Academy, from August 5 to August 7, 2026, at Rugby School Nigeria, Atlantic City, Victoria Island, Lagos. This event, hosted by World Abilitysport in collaboration with the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, attracted participants from various countries including Liberia, Gambia, Brazil, Namibia, the USA/UK, Rwanda, Togo, Botswana, and Nigeria.

ENABLE, which stands for Empowering New Abilities, is an initiative by REACH Africa aimed at transforming lives through adaptive sports and promoting inclusion for persons with disabilities. Over three days, participants will undergo training in fencing techniques, coaching methodologies, competition rules, and officiating, led by Tonye Sawari, Programme Lead for the ENABLE Initiative, and Ivan Schwantes, World Para Fencing Coaching Representative.

Following the Academy, athletes will compete in individual and team events during the Commonwealth Championships. Harry Cootes, Acting CEO of World Abilitysport, emphasized the importance of accessibility in fencing, while Rachael Samuel, REACH Africa Chairperson, highlighted the initiative's commitment to inclusivity.
