Historic Wheelchair American Football Exhibition in Lagos

On September 13, 2026, Nigeria held its inaugural Wheelchair American Football exhibition at the National Institute for Sports in Lagos. The event was organized by American Football Elite Development (AFEDEV) with backing from the U.S.

Consulate General Lagos and the Lagos State Sports Commission. Four teams competed in three games, with Liberty Pioneer remaining undefeated, defeating Iron Invicta 13–0 and edging Atlantic Chargers 10–3.

Atlantic Chargers had previously won against Lagos Dynamos 7–0. The U.S.

Consulate General Lagos contributed jerseys, footballs, meals for athletes, and promotional support. Attendees included U.S. diplomatic personnel, representatives from the German Embassy, and vice-chancellors from the University of Lagos and Lagos State University.

AFEDEV Executive Director Ojaideh Ufoma Lawrence described the exhibition as a milestone, emphasizing the collaboration among various sectors. AFEDEV plans to evaluate the event for future expansion, athlete and coach development, and the establishment of a national super league.
