AFRILAW Trains Human Rights Defenders in Bayelsa

The African Law Foundation (AFRILAW) conducted a training workshop in Yenagoa, Bayelsa, for 30 human rights defenders, journalists, and civil society organizations, focusing on the protection of human rights, corporate accountability, and responsible business practices in the extractive sector. AFRILAW Executive Director Chinweike Okereke stated that human rights defenders are defined by their peaceful actions and stressed the importance of non-violent advocacy.

Dr. Eugene Baddom, representing NHRC Executive Secretary Chief Anthony Ojukwu, reaffirmed the NHRC's commitment to addressing environmental degradation and urged stakeholders to report violations. Legal expert Mrs. Wisdom Friday introduced the Voluntary Principles Initiative (VPI) and encouraged defenders to view peaceful advocates as early-warning indicators.

The workshop, organized with support from the NHRC and alongside the Zero Tolerance Initiative and True Cost Initiative, aimed to enhance access to justice and foster collaboration among Niger Delta host communities. Participant Princess Elizabeth Egbe praised the initiative for its significance in training human rights defenders.
