Davido: Afrobeats Profitable, But Artist Relations Decline

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, known as Davido, discussed the current state of the Nigerian music industry during an episode of the Uncut Podcast. He noted that Afrobeats has become more lucrative than in previous years; however, he expressed concern over the deteriorating relationships among artists.

Davido reflected on the early 2010s, recalling a time when collaboration and camaraderie were prevalent, particularly when he recorded his hit song ‘Dami Duro’ with fellow artists like Wande Coal in the studio. He pointed out that as Afrobeats artists gained wealth and global recognition, intense rivalry and competition emerged, leading to a breakdown in the once-harmonious relationships.

Davido stated, “Financially, it is a great time doing Afrobeats, but the relationship amongst artists is a failure,” highlighting the shift from a collaborative spirit to individualism in the industry.
