NNPC Warns of Power Cuts Due to Seplat Gas Shutdown

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has raised an alarm regarding potential power cuts across Nigeria due to a scheduled four-day shutdown of Seplat's gas production facility for routine maintenance. This maintenance is set to occur from February 12 to February 15, 2026, and is expected to temporarily reduce gas supply to several power generation companies, which could lead to lower electricity output nationwide.

NNPC's Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andi Odeh, stated that the shutdown is mandated by global safety standards and is part of routine safety asset protocols to ensure reliable and efficient operations. The gas supply disruption is particularly concerning as gas-fired plants account for 70% of Nigeria's installed generation capacity.

NNPC has assured stakeholders that gas supply will resume promptly after maintenance, and they are engaging alternative gas suppliers to mitigate supply gaps during this period. The situation underscores the urgent need for investment in gas storage infrastructure and diversification of energy sources to enhance grid resilience.
