Ondo Commission Seeks N94bn to Save Aiyetoro Community

The Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission has announced a requirement of N94 billion to save the coastal community of Aiyetoro in Ilaje Local Government Area from extinction due to persistent erosion caused by the Atlantic Ocean. Chairman Olabiyi Poroy disclosed this during the 2026 World Environment Day celebration held in Aiyetoro, calling on international development partners and donor agencies to support efforts aimed at addressing the growing environmental crisis confronting coastal communities in the state.

A geophysical survey revealed the scale of destruction caused by climate change and rising sea levels, indicating that the financial resources needed exceed the commission's capacity. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa represented the commission at the event, stressing the need for synergy among relevant agencies to improve living conditions for affected residents.

Traditional ruler Oba Oluwamb Ojagbohunmi lamented that 80% of the community's landmass has been lost to the sea over the past two decades, calling for urgent shoreline protection measures.
