AI and Digital Tech to Revolutionize Energy Sector

Tosin Famurewa, Chief Business Officer and Executive Vice President of Ryder Scott, stated that artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are set to reshape the global energy industry over the next decade. Speaking at the NAICE 2025 event in Lagos, he highlighted that the greatest value of AI will come from augmenting human expertise rather than replacing it.

Famurewa identified decision support, reservoir management, and operational efficiency as key areas where AI could significantly impact within five to ten years. He explained that AI can analyze large datasets to extract insights, improve forecasting, and optimize operations.

However, he cautioned that AI cannot replace experienced professionals or sound engineering judgment. Famurewa advised Nigerian oil and gas operators to focus on specific business challenges for digital transformation rather than attempting a broad technology strategy, suggesting improvements in reserves forecasting, compressor downtime reduction, and drilling performance enhancement as starting points.
