Akwa Ibom Advocates for Stronger Digital Media Regulation

The Akwa Ibom State Government has emphasized the necessity for stronger regulation of the digital media landscape to address the spread of misinformation and harmful content. This statement was made by the state Commissioner for Information, Rt.

Hon. Aniekan Umanah, during the inaugural Southern Regional Advertising Conference organized by ARCON at the Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort in Uyo. Umanah urged stakeholders in the advertising, media, and digital communication sectors to adhere to professional and ethical standards, highlighting the challenges posed by the rapid growth of digital platforms.

He noted that the ease of information dissemination online complicates the distinction between credible and misleading content, necessitating enhanced regulatory frameworks and accountability among media practitioners. Umanah clarified that regulation should not be seen as a restriction on innovation or freedom of expression but as essential for responsible communication and public protection.

The conference, which concluded recently, also featured Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, Director-General of ARCON, who discussed the need for practical solutions to industry challenges.
