NSCDC Arrests 39 in Militia Training Crackdown in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested 39 suspects linked to an alleged militia training network during a raid on May 29. The operation, led by Uyo coordinators, revealed that the group was conducting unauthorized paramilitary-style training to recruit youths under false pretenses.

Geraldin Abetianb, a spokesperson for the NSCDC, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended at a training facility where wooden guns, uniforms, and training manuals were recovered. Preliminary investigations indicated that the group operated without the required Private Guard Company (PGC) license as mandated by the NSCDC Act of 2003.

The command emphasized the potential dangers of such militia activities, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching, and condemned the illegal operations. The suspects are currently undergoing profiling to ascertain their true motives, and the NSCDC has assured that those found culpable will face charges in court soon.
