Fire at Lagos Airport Highlights Infrastructure Neglect

Last week, a fire engulfed the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, underscoring the poor maintenance culture of Nigeria's public infrastructure. The fire, which originated from a server room on the ground floor, was contained but reignited discussions about the airport's deteriorating condition.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, described the incident as unfortunate but not criminal. The fire destroyed critical equipment belonging to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), impacting flight safety and operational capabilities.

The airport, operational since 1979, has not undergone significant upgrades to accommodate increasing passenger traffic, which has multiplied due to Nigeria's population growth. Abdullahi Zubeir Mahmood, FAAN's Director of Airport Operations, pointed out that the facility has not been fully rehabilitated in nearly five decades, leading to persistent plumbing and electrical issues.

The incident has raised alarms about the fragility of Nigeria's aviation infrastructure and the urgent need for comprehensive rehabilitation.
