Airtel and Starlink Launch Satellite-to-Mobile in DRC

Airtel Africa and SpaceX’s Starlink have commercially launched satellite-to-mobile connectivity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), marking the first deployment of Starlink Mobile in Africa. This service allows compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites without needing satellite dishes or specialized equipment.

Currently, it supports light data applications, including messaging, and relies on a constellation of over 650 launched satellites. The launch follows a strategic partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX announced in December 2025, with prior testing in Kenya in March 2026.

Airtel Africa CEO, Sunil Taldar, stated that this development could extend connectivity beyond traditional mobile network limits. Airtel DRC Managing Director, Theirry Diasnoma, emphasized the importance of satellite connectivity for people living beyond terrestrial infrastructure.

Customers need a compatible LTE Android smartphone and an active Airtel DRC data bundle. The technology could significantly benefit remote communities and provide backup communications during emergencies, although it should complement rather than replace terrestrial networks.
