Akpabio Declares Three Senate Seats Vacant, INEC Notified

On Tuesday, Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Nigerian Senate, declared three Senate seats vacant during a plenary session. The seats affected are from the Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South East senatorial districts, following the death of the lawmakers who occupied them.

Akpabio made this declaration in accordance with constitutional provisions and subsequently directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections to fill these vacancies within the timeframe stipulated by law. This action reflects the ongoing legislative processes in the Nigerian Senate, which also saw the passage of a budget report that included a significant increase from an initially proposed budget of ₦59 trillion to ₦69 trillion for the year 2026.
