Akpabio Declares Three Senatorial Seats Vacant

On Tuesday, during a plenary session, Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, declared three senatorial seats vacant following the deaths of the members representing those districts. The vacancies arose in the Enugu North Senatorial District in Enugu State, the Nasarawa North Senatorial District in Nasarawa State, and the Rivers South East Senatorial District in Rivers State.

Akpabio explained that these vacancies were in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which addresses the situation of a member's demise. The declaration of these vacancies will lead to midterm elections, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) tasked to conduct fresh elections to fill the seats left vacant.

INEC is required to complete this process within a specified timeframe of approximately 30 days from the declaration.
