Akpabio Declares Three Senate Seats Vacant After Deaths

On Tuesday, Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, announced the declaration of three Senate seats as vacant following the deaths of members of the 10th Senate. The vacancies affect the Enugu North Senatorial District, Nasarawa North Senatorial District, and Rivers South East Senatorial District.

Akpabio made this announcement during a plenary session, citing the necessity of adhering to constitutional provisions due to the tragic events that have befallen the Senate. He formally declared the seats vacant and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections to fill these vacancies within the timeframe stipulated by law.

According to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), INEC is mandated to conduct fresh polls to fill the vacant Senate seats within 30 days of the declaration.
