Akwa Ibom Communities Abolish Harmful Widowhood Practices, Embrace GBV Prevention Charters

In Akwa Ibom State, the communities of Ika and Uyo have made a significant cultural shift by ending harmful widowhood practices and adopting Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention charters. The Ika Traditional Rulers Council, led by Royal Majesty Edidem Joseph Okosi Ekot, signed the Ika Community Covenant for GBV Prevention, abolishing dehumanizing widowhood rites.

Similarly, the Uyo Traditional Rulers Council, led by Royal Majesty Edidem Sylvanus Effiong Okon JP, took steps to prevent violence against women. These actions mark a historic move towards gender equality and the protection of women's rights in the state.
