Rector Urges Protection for Statistics Profession in Nigeria

Mr. Eduma Essien, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ukana, expressed his concerns regarding the deterioration of the statistics profession in Nigeria, attributing it to the activities of unqualified individuals in the field.

During a meeting with the head of the statistics department and staff, he called on the government to create robust legislation to protect the practice of statistics in the country. Essien, a statistician himself, lamented the presence of unqualified individuals working as statisticians and appealed for the recognition of trained and certified professionals.

He emphasized that the field of statistics should be valued and that qualified statisticians are among the best minds globally. Joseph Dagogo, the head of the department, acknowledged Essien's outstanding performance in his first year of leadership, which has led to significant academic progress, including the accreditation of ND and HND programs and improvements in infrastructure.

Other speakers included Dr. Nsikak Essien, Mr.

Idhigu Lucki, and Mr. Ehikioya Uduebor, who praised the rector's leadership style.
