Akwa Ibom Government Allocates N4bn for Land Compensation
The Akwa Ibom State Government has spent over N4 billion on compensation to host communities and property owners to address long-standing land acquisition disputes across key project locations. Dr. Ubong John Inyang, the Commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, announced this during a ministerial briefing on achievements under Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda over the past three years.
The compensation pertains to land acquired for several projects, including the Ibom Medical City and the new headquarters for the Akwa Ibom Geographic Information System (AKWAGIS). Inyang also revealed the establishment of a Land Conflict Resolution Desk aimed at promoting alternative dispute resolution, which has led to the out-of-court settlement or withdrawal of over 100 pending land cases.
Furthermore, he noted that AKWAGIS has been rolled out with digital platforms for title verification, Certificate of Occupancy processing, and revenue collection, while urban planning frameworks are being reviewed in major growth corridors to curb illegal developments.
