AKSUBEB Implements Local Recruitment Policy for Teachers

The Akwa Ibom State Universal Basic Education Board (AKSUBEB) has implemented a significant recruitment policy shift aimed at enhancing teacher effectiveness. Executive Chairman Anietie Etuk announced that, starting with the 2026 Teachers’ recruitment exercise, teachers will be recruited from their immediate areas of residence.

This initiative is designed to reduce teacher absenteeism and eliminate long commutes that negatively impact classroom productivity. For example, a teacher residing in Ikot Ekpene will not be assigned to a school in Uyo.

Additionally, AKSUBEB plans to adopt a “whole-school intervention model” to address infrastructural deficits in schools, which will include comprehensive upgrades such as security fencing, clean water supply, modern sanitation, solar lighting, and on-site teachers’ quarters. Commissioner for Education, Prof Ubong Essien Umoh, mentioned that state investments like scholarships and bursaries are intended to improve school enrollment and academic performance.

Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, clarified that funding for capital infrastructure differs from allocations for teacher gratuities and student bursaries.
