Alaafin's Absence at Oyo's 50th Anniversary Event Sparks Traditional Institution Rift Speculation

Oyo State marked its 50th anniversary with an event at the International Conference Center, University of Ibadan, on Monday. Notably, the Alaafin of Oyo was absent, sparking speculation about rifts within the state's traditional institutions.

Governor Seyi Makinde delivered a welcome address, while the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, conveyed goodwill messages. The state was created on February 3, 1976, during the military regime of late General Murtala Mohammed.

The absence of the Alaafin at the ceremony, attended by dignitaries like the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, did not go unnoticed, reinforcing perceived conflicts within the traditional institutions of the state. The event highlighted tensions following a recent encounter between the Alaafin and the Olubadan, where a video showed an awkward moment between the two monarchs.

The incident led to a statement from coalition traditional leaders condemning disrespect towards Ibadan's traditional institutions and emphasizing the need for cultural respect.
