Alaafin of Oyo Seeks Supreme Court Intervention in Chieftaincy Dispute

The Alaafin of Oyo has taken legal action by filing a motion at the Supreme Court to prevent the Oyo State Government from recognizing and elevating the Baal Ago-Oja chieftaincy stool. This action follows a previous court decision in 2017 declaring the chieftaincy stool non-existent.

The motion seeks to restrain the government from proceeding with the installation of Ganiyu Busari as the Baal Ago-Oja on February 13, 2026. Alaafin's counsel, Adeola Omotunde, argues that the government's actions are unconstitutional and risk being viewed as lawless.

The motion also aims to set aside a state gazette related to the chieftaincy stool. The Supreme Court is yet to schedule a date to hear the appeal accompanying the motion.
