Oyo Governor Makinde Elevates 14 Chiefs Amid Legal Dispute

On January 30, 2026, the Supreme Court of Nigeria is set to hear an appeal regarding the recognition of the Baal Ago Oja chieftaincy stool, which has been contested by the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. In the meantime, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde elevated 14 high chiefs to crown-wearing Obas in a ceremony held at Oliveth Heights, Oyo West Local Government Area.

The newly crowned monarchs include notable figures such as Oba David Oyediran, Oba Mukaila Alajagba, and Oba Samuel Odurind Ona Isokun, among others. Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal presented the insignia on behalf of the governor, emphasizing the administration's commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and promoting grassroots development.
