Alaafin of Oyo Urges Yoruba Diaspora to Reconnect with Culture

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, called on Yoruba people in the diaspora to reconnect with their traditional religion and cultural heritage for spiritual strengthening and personal fulfillment. This appeal was made during the grand finale of the World Sango Festival at the Oyo Palace.

In a statement from his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin highlighted the festival as a moment for the Yoruba to reflect on their history and cultural identity in a globalized world. He noted that technological advancements and global interactions necessitate a connection to cultural roots.

The Alaafin explained the significance of Sango, revered for his leadership and diplomatic skills, stating that his reign solidified Oyo's position as a prominent state. He expressed concern over the negative perceptions of African traditional practices influenced by Christianity, Islam, and colonial attitudes, urging a reassessment of heritage to preserve identity.
