Kogi Minister Urges Youths to Combat Illegal Mining
On Thursday, Dr Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, called on youths in Kogi State to engage community elders and local authorities to withdraw support for illegal mining activities. This appeal was made during a meeting with members of the Concerned Kogi Youths Against Environmental Degradation, who protested the environmental impacts of mining in Kogi State.
Alake highlighted the Ministry's efforts, noting the deployment of technology and the strengthening of the Mining Marshals to combat illegal mining. He reported that between March 2024 and August 2026, the Mining Marshals identified 374 illegal mining sites, cleared 108, arrested 743 suspects, and secured five convictions.
Alake warned that illegal mining undermines legitimate operators and emphasized the need for community engagement to support law enforcement in addressing the issue. He was accompanied by various directors from the Ministry, including Engr. Imam Ganiyu and Dr Vivian Okono.
