Nigeria's Education Minister Launches UNILAG-Birmingham Degrees

The Federal Government has announced a new international education partnership between the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), introducing two postgraduate programmes: an MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Technologies, and an MA in Digital Media and Communications. These programmes are set to commence in September 2027.
The initiative, led by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, aims to expand access to internationally recognized qualifications and strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system. Alausa stated that this collaboration aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance education quality.
The courses were selected to meet the growing demand for expertise in technology and digital communication. The MSc programme will cover machine learning, deep learning, and AI ethics, while the MA will focus on digital cultures and research methods.
Plans are also in place to extend the partnership to undergraduate degrees.
