UNILAG's Distance Learning Initiative Gains Support

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), under Vice Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, is advancing its Distance Learning Institute (DLI) to offer degrees equivalent to those awarded to conventional students. Professor Risikat Oladoyin Dauda, the DLI Director, emphasizes the importance of integrating technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address educational challenges for Nigeria's 89 million youths aged 15 to 30.

During the 5th International Colloquium of DLI on August 25, 2026, former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo highlighted that with Nigeria's population projected to reach 236 million by 2036, DLI could become the primary means of university education for three million youths. He stressed that while technology is essential, the focus should remain on human development.

The colloquium featured international experts, including Professor Stephen Brown from the UK’s Open University, who shared insights on ensuring equitable access to education through ODL.
