Former Arsenal Goalkeeper Alex Manninger Dies at 48

Alex Manninger, a former goalkeeper for Arsenal, tragically died at the age of 48 following a car accident involving a train near Salzburg, Austria, on April 16, 2023. The incident occurred at approximately 08:20 local time when Manninger's vehicle struck a train at a level crossing.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene and used a defibrillator in an attempt to revive him; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The train driver was unharmed.

Manninger had a notable football career, making 64 appearances for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, winning the Premier League and FA Cup. He earned 33 caps for Austria and was part of the squad for UEFA Euro 2008.

Peter Schottel, the Austrian Football Association's sports director, acknowledged Manninger's contributions to the sport. He began his career with Red Bull Salzburg and played for 14 clubs across Europe, including Juventus and Liverpool, where he signed a short-term deal in 2016.
