Veteran journalist Chief Lekan Alabi, Ibadan chief, dies at 76

Chief Lekan Alabi, who held the title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland and was recognized as an accomplished journalist, passed away in Lagos on Saturday morning at age 76. His death was communicated through a statement issued from Ibadan by Adeola Oloko, media representative serving Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the region's Olubadan.

Alabi's professional legacy encompassed both journalism and governmental communications work. He served in the capacity of press secretary to several former governors of Oyo State throughout his career.

His chieftaincy status reflected his prominence within Ibadan society, and he became known for championing the city's historic customs and traditions. The Isale-Osi neighbourhood, where both he and Oba Ladoja spent their formative years, held significance in their shared history.

Upon receiving news of Alabi's death, Oba Ladoja released a statement characterizing him as an exceptional and remarkable individual. The Olubadan expressed profound sorrow at losing someone with whom he had maintained a lifelong connection, noting Alabi's sustained involvement in public and cultural endeavours.

Oyo State's Governor, Seyi Makinde, similarly released condolences, characterizing Alabi's death as a substantial loss affecting both the state and Nigeria. The governor emphasized Alabi's accomplishments in journalism, his role in upholding Yoruba cultural heritage, and his dedication to public service, noting his standing for integrity, wisdom, and unwavering commitment.

Makinde highlighted that leaders across different eras had valued and sought his guidance throughout his life.
