Alleged Coup Plotters Arraigned in Abuja Court

On Wednesday, the 1st of November 2023, six individuals, including Major General Moham Ibrahim Gana and former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, were formally arraigned in Abuja on 13 counts of conspiracy to commit treason and plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The defendants, who pleaded not guilty, were remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik, who ordered an expedited trial.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, requested the court to accelerate the trial process, while the defendants' lawyers sought access to their clients for adequate preparation of their defense. The charges against the defendants include allegations of planning to wage war against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and failing to inform authorities about the treasonous plans.

The trial is scheduled to commence on April 27, 2024.
