Nigerian Government Files Treason Charges Against Coup Plotters

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disclosed the identities of individuals accused of plotting to forcibly overthrow President Bola Tinubu. Among those charged is former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva.

The charges, filed in the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/206/2026, include 13 counts of conspiracy to wage war against the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which contravenes Section 37(2) of the Criminal Code. Other notable figures implicated include Major General Moham Ibrahim Gana, Captain Erasmus Ochegobia, and several others.

The arraignment is set for April 22 before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. The charges were signed by Rotimi Oyedepo, the Director of Public Prosecutions for the Federal Government.

The government accuses the defendants of treason and terrorism, alleging a failure to disclose security intelligence and connections to money laundering linked to terrorist financing. The prosecution emphasizes that the defendants had prior knowledge of the treasonous plans.
