Abuja Court Grants Activist N5M Bail in Cybercrime Case

Justice Joyc Abdulmalik of an Abuja court granted bail of N5 million to an activist facing cybercrime charges. The bail conditions require the activist to provide proof of residency within the court's jurisdiction, including a minimum four-year tenancy agreement and evidence of employment as a federal civil servant at grade level 15 or above.

The prosecution, represented by M.L. Aboy, indicated readiness to commence trial, presenting Oronto Douglas, a Department of State Services (DSS) operative, as a witness.

Douglas testified that the activist voluntarily made an extra-judicial statement in the presence of a lawyer from the Legal Aid Council. The prosecution also submitted evidence, including a flash drive containing videos allegedly posted by the activist on social media.

The defense, led by Sam Amadi, objected to the admissibility of the flash drive's content, arguing it was not properly evaluated. The court subsequently adjourned the matter to May 25 for the continuation of the trial.
