Court Grants N5 Million Bail to Social Media Critic

The Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail of N5 million to Garu Gololo, a social media critic accused of insulting Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Nigerian Senate. Justice Rita Ofili Ajumogobia presided over the case, which involves seven counts of cybercrime and defamation filed by the Nigeria Police Force.

Gololo was earlier remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre and pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution alleges that Gololo published a viral video and Facebook post claiming that Akpabio's support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027 could lead to his expulsion from Nigeria.

The charges state that Gololo made false and malicious comments intended to mislead the public and incite tension. The court has adjourned the case until September 22 for the continuation of the trial.
