Alli Campaign Critiques Makinde Over Failed Power Project

The Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation has criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for attributing the reliance on diesel-powered generators for streetlights to inadequate electricity supply. The campaign organization questioned the effectiveness of the ₦8.5 billion Independent Power Project (IPP) awarded to Elektron Energy, alleging it failed to generate any electricity.

Bisi Oladele, Director of Media and Publicity for the Alli Campaign Council, described Makinde's explanation as “disingenuous” and indicative of leadership failure. The Electricity Act 2023, signed by President Bola Tinubu, allows states to generate and distribute electricity, which the campaign claims Makinde has not utilized effectively.

The campaign organization labeled the IPP a “phantom project” and a “white elephant,” stating it was terminated after significant funds were spent without delivering promised electricity for public infrastructure. They compared Oyo's situation unfavorably with successful projects in other states, highlighting the failure of the diesel-powered streetlights and the associated costs.
