Nigerian Doctors to Begin Indefinite Strike on April 7

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting at 12:00 PM on April 7, 2026. This decision follows the federal government's failure to implement a revised professional allowance agreement that was reached in 2025.

NARD's president, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, described the situation as unfortunate and blamed the federal government for pushing doctors toward industrial action.

The strike is a response to the government's decision to halt the implementation of the revised allowance table, which was supposed to improve remuneration packages for resident doctors. Although the rollout was initially scheduled for January 2026, it has faced delays, with the government now planning to discontinue the process in April.

This strike threatens to disrupt healthcare services across public hospitals in Nigeria, which are already facing a severe shortage of medical personnel, with a doctor-to-patient ratio significantly below World Health Organization standards.
