NARD Declares Indefinite Nationwide Strike Starting April 7

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), represented by Secretary General Shuaibu Ibrahim, announced an indefinite nationwide strike set to commence at 12:00 AM on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. This decision follows an extraordinary virtual meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) where they expressed disappointment over the federal government's actions, which they believe are pushing doctors towards industrial action.

The strike is a response to the government's removal of professional allowances and the failure to implement previously agreed-upon terms from a 2025 agreement, which included improvements in remuneration for resident doctors, such as duty allowances, rural post incentives, and payment for non-clinical duties. NARD accused the government of undermining trust and breaching earlier agreements, demanding an immediate reversal of the decision and payment of outstanding entitlements, including 19 months of salary arrears and the prompt conclusion of the 2026 medical residency training fund payment process.
