Amaechi Critiques El-Rufai's Bail Conditions as Impossible

Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State and vice-presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress, has publicly criticized the ongoing detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Amaechi described the bail conditions set for El-Rufai as impossible to fulfill, questioning the rationale behind requiring El-Rufai to depend on individuals associated with the authorities prosecuting him for his release.

He pointed out that such conditions could defeat the purpose of bail, which is intended to prevent unnecessary custody before a trial. Amaechi stated that El-Rufai has been detained since February and argued that continued detention creates an impression of guilt before a trial has concluded.

He asserted that the essence of bail is to avoid punishing an accused person prior to a legal determination of their guilt or innocence.
