AMCE Pushes For Bold Reforms In African Healthcare

At the Nigerian Medical Association's Annual General Meeting in Calabar, the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) called for bold reforms in African healthcare. Chief Medical Officer Aisha Umar emphasized the need for stronger healthcare policies, wider partnerships, and ambitious actions to bridge the healthcare gap in Africa.

Umar highlighted the growing health disparities in Africa, with millions underserved and bearing a significant disease burden. AMCE, supported by Afreximbank and the Nigerian government, aims to address challenges such as outbound medical tourism and inadequate specialist care.

The centre, opened in June 2025 in Abuja, offers advanced care in oncology, cardiovascular services, and hematology, with plans to expand to 500 beds. Umar urged stakeholders to work together to transform the continent's healthcare system, making quality care accessible to all.
