Gwarzo Resigns as Kano State Deputy Governor Amid Scandal

Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has formally resigned from his position as Deputy Governor of Kano State. His resignation was confirmed by his Chief Press Secretary on Friday.

This decision follows the initiation of impeachment proceedings against him by the Kano State House of Assembly, which took place three weeks prior. The assembly, comprising 38 members, endorsed a motion citing allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of authority.

Specifically, Gwarzo is accused of receiving kickbacks amounting to 1.5 million naira monthly from 44 local government councils in the state, totaling 66 million naira per month, which sums up to 462 million naira over a seven-month period. Additionally, from February to July 2024, he allegedly received further cash returns of 3.255 million naira monthly, bringing the total amount he is accused of receiving during this period to 726 million naira.

Gwarzo's political troubles reportedly began when he chose not to defect to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
